The Lion King musical is a theatrical adaptation of the 1994 box office movie produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation. The first off-Broadway premiere of the Lion King was in 1997 at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Lion King musical features the story of the young cub Simba who is being groomed to become the next heir of Pride Land, but this doesn’t come without obstacles. His own uncle, Scar, plots a coup to overthrow Simba’s father, Mufasa, and kill Simba to secure the thrown. Simba manages to escape to the wilderness and years later comes back all grown ready to challenge Scar to the throne. The success of Lion King musical premiere became so famous that it immediately earned a Broadway opening at New Amsterdam Theatre in 1997. Soon enough, the Broadway performance premiered in America at the Minskoff Theatre where it boasts of having made 6,700 performances. The Lion King still holds weekly shows at the Minskoff and still manages to fill the arena with eager audiences. Globally, the Lion King has been reproduced in 24 different languages in countries like Germany, China, Mexico, Japan, Netherlands, and Spain. In the UK, the Broadway performance premiered in 1999 at the Lyceum Theatre. This was an opportunity for the Lion King to become an instant theatrical success in West Ends theaters, even earning a prestigious and exclusive performance in the presence of the British Royal Family. The Lion King is the third longest running Broadway musical shows and has won over 70 global awards. It continues to thrill and awe the audience in attendance with emotional, clever and funny performances by the most talented actors alive. The music themes were originally arranged by the legendary Elton John, Tim Rice, and Hans Zimmer. Lion King is the only musical with great diversity in dialects, with African languages like Xhosa, Zulu, Swahili, and Congolese frequently used in the shows.
